the most demanding catch and throw position on the entire field is shortstop. most people think shortstops train with small gloves because they are elite fielders, when in reality the best shortstops are the best because they use a small glove. the smaller your glove, more precise your brain gets with where you catch the ball and your glove presentation improves (how you hold the glove relative to the incoming ball). kids who use the correct size glove learn to catch better and have superior transfer skills.
I used an 11.5 inch glove my entire career, but only in the game. All of my practice and pre-game reps were with a 9 inch glove in my hand. A few years into my professional career I saw the pattern, everyone who had elite hands used smaller gloves both in game and practice. Young players can benefit by doing the same thing.

The pros have glove models designed to fit their hand and to meet the specific demands of their position. Young players need the same. Here are the four biggest problems with the current youth glove options.

leather quality

cheap leather is flimsy, unstable and the pocket doesn't hold it's shape. these gloves break in poorly, form bad habits and don't last for very long.

bigger is not better

big gloves are too heavy and move the pocket away from the hand, decreasing catching accuracy and making it harder to catch.

pro models are not ideal

How we started

In 2023 there was a recurring topic of conversation throughout the New York Yankees' clubhouse, no one could find a quality leather, customizable glove designed specifically for their kids. All the options were either too big, too heavy, fit terribly, reinforced bad patterns, or took years to break in. Guys started wondering if there was a better way.

With the help of teammates, coaches, and friends, Kevin Smith and Matt Talarico went on a mission to design the best youth glove on the market. Everyone grows up wanting to be a big leaguer. Kali provides players a big-league quality glove that is designed specifically to help them play the game better.
