Smaller Glove, Big Results
It's important for youth athletes to use a glove that isn't too big - it needs to be light, controllable, and help train catch precision. Kali Glove pockets are big enough for baseballs and softballs, but at only 10.5 inch they give athletes the fit, feel, and quality needed to become their best.

Q&A WITH KEVIN SMITH
What made you start a glove company?
When I started doing kids camps in 2015, I realized a lot of youth players were using gloves that made it harder for them to learn how to catch. I know how important having the right glove is and I had a vision of making a big-league quality glove engineered specifically for youth players. When I met Matt Talarico and we started designing the Kali Glove, I saw first hand how much it was helping his girls. We started giving them out friends and family and saw the same results and it grew from there. We spent a lot of time perfecting the Kali Glove before releasing it in 2024 after I retired from the game.
Why do you think it works so well?
We spent a lot of time creating a glove that is modified and engineered specifically for smaller hands, giving kids a glove that looks just like their favorite big leaguers that performs for them on the field. We scaled the size down so that its lighter while still having a pocket. We added finger loops and elastic wrist lace so it fits kids' hands and they have the proper leverage to use it properly. We have the palm slits to keep the integrity of the pocket and as a visual of where to catch the ball. All while using 100% Japanese Kip Leather making the glove extremely durable, shortening the break in time, and feeling like a big-leaguer's gamer.
I noticed the Kali Glove is smaller (10.5 inches) than a lot of other gloves on the market, why is that?
A lot of reasons! The first is because kids just cant control bigger gloves. Having the right size glove gives kids the control and confidence to make the right moves and catch the ball one handed, which is essential when learning how to catch. Smaller gloves make you concentrate more and be more precise with the pocket. This is why almost all big leaguers use gloves as small as 8 inches in practice and before games. It's also easier to transfer the ball to your throwing hand from a small glove than a big glove. This is why big league infielders use gloves as small as 11 inches in the game. Freddy Galvis played in over 1000 big league games and I saw him use gloves as small as 10 inches in a game!
Why is having quality leather so important?
The quality of the leather is very important, it dictates a lot about how the glove performs. If your glove is made from cheap, or fake, leather it will be very light and won't provide a sturdy pocket. It can also bend or flatten easily, leading to a small or poorly located pocket. A bigger glove with bad leather can make it substantially harder to catch than a glove like the Kali Glove because our leather gives players a secure, stable pocket and the catching area is the entire glove. With floppy leather you need to catch it closer to the palm or the leather will actually give with the ball and its a lot harder to leverage the hand to keep the ball in the glove. All our gloves are made with 100% Japanese Kip Leather, it's so good big leaguers have said it feels better than their gamers!
It's hard for my kid to break in a glove on their own, how do I help them?
With most gloves, if you break it in for your kids you'll stretch it out and make it fit worse. It may be softer and easier to close but your kid will lose all leverage and it will flop around in their hand all game. With a Kali Glove you can loosen the wrist lace and put your hand in over the finger loops in the back of the palm to break it in. Once it's game ready, your kid puts their fingers into the finger loops and tightens the back wrist lacing, allowing them to use a glove with quality leather and a perfect fit.
Why do you only have one colorway for the Kali Glove?
We believe that standing out on the field is what its all about, so we created a colorway that does just that. Our signature Kali Mint is a beacon on the field, and everyone can tell you're serious about your game. The mint color is popular throughout the MLB because of it's clean yet stylish appearance. We plan on only ever carrying this one color, but we do have a custom option coming soon!
How do I store my glove so it lasts multiple seasons?
Most of the time your glove is in your bag or on the bench, so its important to know how to store it so it will last as long as possible. Never lay the glove down on the thumb side, always put it down on the pinky or with fingers down so its standing up. Our gloves come with a glove bag, so you can store it in your bag without it getting dirty or scratched. It's always smart to keep a baseball or softball in your glove when you're not using it so it doesn't become flat and lasts longer. There are players I played with who would use the same glove their entire career. I would keep a weighted ball slightly bigger than a baseball in my gloves with elastic around it. This way, my pocket was always protected and my glove never got flat or too floppy.
